Climate-Smart Agriculture Adoption in Fragile Regions: Key Findings
IN · Published May 23, 2026
A recent global meta-analysis led by ICARDA’s Dr.
Boubaker Dhehibi has examined the adoption of climate-smart agricultural technologies in fragile and conflict-affected regions.
The study reviewed over 42,000 scientific records and 112 studies, revealing both opportunities and challenges in these vulnerable areas.

Why It's Important?

Farmers in fragile regions are disproportionately affected by climate stress and conflict, which threaten food security and livelihoods. Limited adoption of climate-smart technologies exacerbates these challenges, particularly for poorer households with fewer resources. The lack of access to risk-reduction tools, such as agricultural insurance, leaves farmers vulnerable to climate shocks and economic instability. Additionally, the uneven focus of research, with over 80% of studies concentrated in Ethiopia and Nigeria, neglects other vulnerable regions, including Small Island States. This imbalance risks leaving many communities without the tailored solutions they need to adapt and thrive.
